Homer - First launch 2
It might be a good idea to have another window open with the screen shot so you don't have to switch back and forth, if you want another window, click here. (This link will open the screen shot in this window)
In the screen shot i have left the default values of the nick and so on, so I am called 'Kickme'.
Looks complicated? Well, lets break it down into sections. Firstly the main window.
From left to right :
- '1' is the channel number in Homer (not really important)
- '#macintosh' is the name of the channel
- 'Voodoo2 for Rev A+B iMacs $199. Apple may s' is part of the topic. The window isn't big enough to see all of it. You can read the whole topic in the actual window, it's the first thing in blue.
Underneath that is
From left to right
- The big circle with 'Op' under it tells you if you are an op in the channel or not (it's red if you are)
- Next are the mode switches, if they are up the mode is on, down for off. I'll explain exactly what they are later
- Next to them are two buttons (you can't see them well at the moment since I'm not an op here). The top one is for changing the topic, the bottom for inviting a person into a channel
At the bottom of that window we see
From top to bottom this is :
- The full topic (the topic in #macintosh on this server is often news about the mac as it is now)
- #macintosh - the channel; 918873654 is actually a code which represents the time/date the topic was set; and finally, the nick of the person who set the topic (in this case it was someone called Broken).
- The users that are in the channel (should be the same as the userlist). The @ before the nick tells you the person is an op
|
This is the userlist, a list of the users in the active channel.
The names in the userlist will differ depending who is on the channel at the time, however Frankie should always be there (i will explain about Frankie in a later section). The people who are in red are the ops.
If you look at 'Kickme' you will notice 'newbie@195.206.'. The newbie is the username and the 195.206. is the first part of my IP
Nearer the bottom are 3 buttons. From left to right they are :
- (The man walking) The 'whois' function, gives more details about the person. Someone has to be selected in the userlist (by clicking once on them) before this will work.
- The thumbs down - kick the selected person off the channel (not available since i'm not an op and no-one is selected)
- The present - give the selected person ops (again not available since i'm not an op and no-one is selected)
Under that is the 'Go offline' button. This sets you as 'away', you are busy doing something else or away from the computer. It lets other people know that you're not there.
Under that is your current nickname, in this case it's 'Kickme'

Next let look at the input line
At the left is the link button. This is homer's way of sending private messages, if you select someone in the userlist and then click on link, everything you type will be sent to that person as private messages. The person's nick will be displayed under the link button. To speak in the channel again just click the link button again. We'll look at the proper way to do this later.
The middle is where the text you're typing appears before you send it. To send something to the channel press return, don't press the action button. This is the most commonest mistake people make - the action button does something different. It (action button) is pretty useless, becuase there's a much simplier and faster way to do the same thing, we will cover the way to do it in a later section so for now ignore it.
By now you should know what everything does so it's time to start chatting. Go to the next section to find out more
