Abbreviations and smilies
IRC involves a lot of typing, so various abbreviations and other symbols have been invented to try and reduce the typing involved. Also, it's very difficult to see what other people are really thinking when they say something (you can't hear how they say something, nor see) so 'smilies' show emotions.
Abbreviations (the more common ones). Users will often put these in their nicks, eg Knox[afk] would mean i was away from the keyboard.
