IRC - Glossary

Bot
A Computer controlled user. See
this page for more info.

Channel/Room
Can be thought of as a room (hence the term room sometimes being used) where people can join and talk. More than one conversation can be happening at the same time in a room. See the
beginning of this guide for more info

Client
The Software used to connect to an IRC Server.

IRCd
The Software used to create an IRC server which clients can connect to. The d comes from the UNIX term daemon

IRCop/IRC Operator/IRC Cop
An IRC Operator (shortened down to ircop) has overall control of the IRC server. This doesn't mean they have control of any channel, ircops cannot to anything to channels without first being made an op in the channel. However, IRCops can remove people from the server (kill) and also prevent people from logging onto the server (kline). This may make them sound like police which is the reason some people will refer to them as IRC Cops, however ircops are not police and so will not take kindly to being called IRC Cops (ie, don't do it!)

op/operator/host
All these terms refer to a channel operator (shortened down to op). The op has powers in a specific channel that the ordinary user doesn't - they control how the channel operates, who is allowed in the channel and have powers to forcibly remove people from the channel. The term host is being used more now, it comes from the web based chatrooms and also Microsoft Chat. On IRC there is no such thing as a host, they are called an op. See
this page for more info

opped/oped
The state of having or being given ops (see above) in a channel. Eg "I'm opped" or "He opped me".
